Background
A
lifetime love affair with visual fine art best describes my background. In
Kindergarten I
won my first award with a sculpture of a
cat in a curled up position. From that time forward "Art in all
of its facetsÓ has been my passion.
To make a long story short I have been
Senior Art Director at Showacre Coons Shotwell and Adams
Advertising & Public Relation, the
largest ad agency in eastern Washington State; Creative Director at
Francis Williams & Johnson Ltd.
Advertising & Public Relations Counsel, the largest ad agency in the
Province of Alberta Canada; Communications
Manager, Advertising Manager and builder of an internal
advertising agency at Morrison Knudsen
Company (an international billion dollar engineering and
construction corporation); the owner of
two very creative and art oriented advertising agencies...
Wilkinson Advertising and Marketing, and
Wilkinson & Gessel Advertising; and now the owner of
Wilkinson Galleries... an on-line
marketplace for my artwork.
The
reason for the explanation of my
advertising career is because of its relationship to fine art
and the community. Maybe more than anyone
else in Southern Utah, I know the enormous impact that
visual art can have on the economy of a
business, a city, and a community.
As
important as was my advertising career I have taught Fine Art (life drawing and
painting, portrait
painting and basic and advanced drawing
and painting) at "Weber State University" in Ogden, Utah, and at
two private art schools... "Riverside
Art Center" in Riverside, California and "Bertha Eccles Community
Art Center in Ogden, Utah". I am a member of the Portrait Society
of America, The Oil Painters of America,
plus the past Chairman of the Visual Arts
Association of St George, Utah and past member of the St George
Arts Commission.
Philosophy
When
we consider the infinite variety of action of the human form, its suppleness,
grace and strength
of movement in the expression of the fleeting
moment, it requires a knowledge of structure, of an understanding
of action and of insight into character to
capture the true image.
It has been said, "Like man himself
is a subtle merging of mind and matterÓ. The portrait's and life
artists task is to express both at the
same time. By minimizing the discrepancies and magnifying the
similarities
between the inner and outer selves, the
best artists make an image that shows the two parts merged in harmony."
I believes wholly in this concept... it, like
no other, brings an emergence of life to canvas and drawing board.
Realism is important, but not to a
photographic finality. Although I do paint photographically when asked
I
prefers the medium's color and texture to speak for itself... brush stroke,
contŽ, pencil, wash, etc.
